A little about me:

A student recently gave me a personality test. She asked me to name my favorite color and list four descriptive words. She asked my favorite animal and, again, to list four descriptive words. She then asked me to describe the ocean. Lastly, she asked that I picture myself in a windowless room with nothing in it. She assured me I wouldn’t be hungry and asked four words to describe how I feel. (I had to clarify that there would be no materials in the room to make things with).

Color (clear)

How I see myself

  • transparent

  • transformative

  • potential

  • bright

Ocean

How I see love

  • vast

  • deep

  • healing

  • mysterious

Animal (dog)

How others see me

  • lovable

  • loyal

  • responsive

  • intuitive

Windowless Room

How I see death

  • despair

  • crazy

  • panic

  • dread

After I wrote my responses, she shared the meanings and confirmed that what I listed under ‘how others see me’ is true. While this was a fun game, nothing was more meaningful than this student’s affirmation of qualities I aspire to.

I listen to students, and to others. I love that I am in the profession of IDEAS and that I get to create opportunities for shared experiences and growth. I hope that students find joy and love in the process of inquiry and making.

And a room with absolutely nothing to create with is absolutely unfathomable. It is my purpose to continue opening my eyes to the possibilities around me and I hope my students do the same, through whatever means they find to engage in creative thought processes. A windowless room, where my eyes are shut to the world around me, would surely mean death.
